Paintball Fans In A Quandary

Bandar Seri Begawan - Authorities recently suspended activities on a paintball field in Manggis Satu. The police said the case is still under investigation.
The suspension came as a surprise to some, as the field had operated for quite sometime.
According to a paintball enthusiast, it has developed into one of the safest action sports in the world today. It is a sport anyone can play between the ages of 12 and 60. It teaches safety, teamwork, problem solving and decision making, said one of the owners of the paintball field, Dr Aammton Hj Alias.
He said paintball has potential in Brunei, even in the promotion of tourism and potential in a way that local players could represent the country to partake at international tournament. He said a team to represent Brunei was practising to participate in the Paintball Asean League. However, this has come to a sudden halt. The league has also voiced its interest for holding a tournament in Brunei, it is understood.
He explained that in the game of paintball, each player is equipped with a semi-automatic paint gun called `Marker' powered by carbon dioxide, nitrogen or compressed air system that shoots the paintball to a distance.
The paintball or pellets is a found, thin-skinned gelatine capsule with coloured liquid inside it. The coloured liquid is non-toxic, non-caustic, water soluble and biodegradable. The paintball will burst upon contact and leaves a bright paint mark. The ones who are marked are considered eliminated in the game.
"It is impossible to convert the Marker into a gun, because a Marker does not have a firing pin and hammer," he said, adding that the mechanism of firing the paint pellet is totally different from a gun.
He said in terms of safety, paintball players must always wear goggles specifically designed for paintball to protect their eyes. Goggles must be worn during a game and at all times when a person is in an area where shooting is permitted, such as the target range or chronograph area.
A protective facemask is mandatory nearly everywhere, and should be worn regardless. Paintball is a very safe sport as long as safety rules are followed. Insurance statistics have shown that paintball is safer than golf, jogging, tennis, swimming and many other sports.
